Strips 5775-5876 (June 17, 1957 to October 12, 1957)
The Daily Planet wants to highlight the ways in which Metropolis citizens can help support city hospitals. When Clark Kent arranges an interview with Dr. Griffiths, Griffiths decides to make an example out of Clark Kent. The doctor convinces Clark Kent to donate his blood to save an unconscious patient. Unable to back out, Clark donates his super-blood, which has the unforeseen effects of giving the girl patient superpowers. Will Superman be able to convince Myrtle to use her powers for good?
Notes: This story seems similar to the "Lois Lane - Superwoman" storyline from 1943 in Action Comics #60. However, what is more interesting is the length of the story (1/3 of the year, with Myrtle in her costume for much of it), and the fact that it is so close to Superman #123 (August 1958) which many consider to be the Supergirl "tryout" issue. Kara Zor-el, the true Supergirl, then made her first appearance in 1959. Could this episode then be viewed as another "tryout" of a female superhero companion for Superman?
