Episode 104: The Super-Duel in Space

Strips 6033-6146 (April 14, 1958 to August 23, 1958)

Perry White sends Lois and Clark into space, covering the historic test of the government's first spaceship. However upon launch, an unknown force pulls the ship far past earth's gravitational field. Superman learns that a mysterious alien named Romado is behind the abduction. Romado explains that he is a collector, and has miniaturized cities from across the galaxy, including Krypton, for his collection. Romado challenges Superman to a game of chess, with the cities of Earth as the chess pieces. However, when Superman accuses him of playing unfairly, Romado shrinks Superman down and places him in the lost Kryptonian city of Dur-El-Va. Without powers, how can Superman escape?

Notes: This episode features the character Romado, who is seen to be a prototype of the later Brainiac, which appeared in Action Comics #242 (July 1958). Like Brainiac, Romado has a robotically-enhanced mind and collects cities in miniaturized bottles. This story was later retold in Action Comics #242 (July 1958)
